SYMBIOSIS

SYMBIOSIS, presented by the Ziomara Hormaetxe Contemporary Dance Company, explores the concept of symbiotic relationships, where individuals coexist and mutually benefit, creating a synergistic effect. Inspired by Lynn Margulis’ work “Symbiotic Planet,” the dance piece delves into the concepts of mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism, providing a movement map for the dancers that emphasizes the mutual need to subsist and benefit, ultimately developing a language that accentuates “physicality.”

For this commissioned project, I propose a scenography characterized by minimalist aesthetics, comprising fields of audiovisual projections and a singular sculptural element that serves as a focal point and enhancer. This sculptural element not only supports the weight of the dancers but also acts as a connecting link within the dance composition. The scenography, thus, emotionally navigates the fusion between two-dimensionality and three-dimensionality, shaping the scene with elements of volume, transparency, and corporeal objectivity. This design approach aims to enrich the visual and thematic experience of the performance.

As a source of inspiration for creating the sculptural piece “The Human Roots,” I drew from Tao philosophy, where the bonsai serves as a symbol of eternity and a connection between the divine and the human. Through a process of geometricizing the organic forms of the roots, I generated multiple layers of wooden frames. These layers, when superimposed, collectively shape the final cubicle. This approach harmonizes the organic essence of the roots with geometric precision.
